Optimum Nutrition 100% Casein Vanilla

Product Reviews No Comments

Damn this stuff is good. Mixes great, tastes beautiful, doesn’t froth and is perfectly thick!

It doesn’t quite mix as well as the chocolate version but still after 10 seconds or less it’s all done. The taste is a bit sweet but not at all sickly sweet and there is a very weak vanilla taste to it. It’s nicely thick as one serve in about 500mL of water so it’s very filling which is perfect for the Velocity Diet.

Really this is the best vanilla flavoured protein powder I’ve had and mixing it with the Dymatize Butter Toffee makes that stuff bearable.

I’d reccomend th Optimum Nutrition 100% Casein in Vanilla or Chocolate to anyone looking for a long lasting protein.

Gaspari Nutrion Cytolean

I have always been skeptical about ‘fat burning’ products, though I really would love to try an ECA stack but unfortunately in Australia Ephedra and it’s related products are all banned. Given that this is supposed to the the fat burning stack and anything else is just making do I hadn’t given anything any thought.

In my last order I got a sample pack of Cytolean, three (3) capsules in a nice little pack with some instructions to take 1-3 daily. I thought I’d just take one and see if that made any noticeable difference to anything.

On taking the first capsule (and hte capsules are very cool looking) yesterday I did get a noticeable improvement in energy and wasn’t hungry for a good few hours. I ate mainly because I knew I should keep the schedule. This anti-hunger wore off probably about 4-5 hours later. The energy I didn’t really notice wearing off because it was so smooth. I wasn’t jittery and buzzing I just wasn’t at all sleepy or tired. It was more of an anti-tired thing than a pro-energy effect.

This morning I was literally falling asleep in front of the computer, I was dozing off while typing it was that bad so noticing the capsules sitting there I thought this was a good test to see if I got any energy. Within about thirty minutes I was not even remotely tired and I’m actually a little buzzy in my cheeks and feeling a bit like I’ve had too many stimulants, but not in a bad way. I’m not remotely thinking about food I’m having the check the clock to make sure I don’t miss my shake.

I mean I’ll try it again tomorrow but at this point I’m willing to buy a bottle of these to try them out on an extended basis. They’ve definitely turned me around on the topic of fat burners, energy tabs and appetite suppressors.

So I’m sitting here feeling not the least bit tired, having a bit of a buzz and feeling good about things.

I’m rarely comfortable suggesting products where I can’t absolutely say that it works or it’s a good product, I can only say that so far these things are definitely working a magic on me that I didn’t expect. Very glad I got this sample!

Just an update, this is a really bad product. I’ve been using it consistently since I got it just to get through it as quickly as possible; it’s not worth the difference in price between this and the ON products.

Mixability is shockingly bad, you can’t cook with it, flavour is bad.

Give it a big miss.

As always this review is for the Cookies and Cream flavoured product mixed with water.

First impressions were that it’s ’softer’ than the ON Casein that I’m used to, it’s more like milk powder in texture and smell. You can see little bits of brown spec in it but for the most part it’s white. The smell isn’t great, but it isn’t strong and it doesn’t smell very artificial like Dymatize stuff does. It isn’t a sickly sweet smell at all, it’s like milk powder.

Quality : It’s basically on par with ON for protein per weight of product, however it does contain WPC and other whey rather than just being micellar casein and caseinates. Initial impression on use is that it isn’t as good as ON in a number of ways, but it is a bit cheaper and available in larger quantities which makes it much cheaper.

Mixability : Quite poor compared to ON and does require quite a vigorous shake or some blending, however it does mix eventually. Products like Max’s just will not mix without a blender. This can be shaken it just takes a bit more than ON. It foams quite a bit which doesn’t help and I find that I need to let it settle after mixing so that it’s drinkable.

Taste : The taste isn’t overpowering, nor is it cookies and cream, it’s really just a very mild, but bad, vanilla taste. It’s not very artificial, and overall would be fine to mix with other flavours. I think I’d be keen to try their chocolate flavour if all their flavouring is this mild. It’s no where near as good as the ON Chocolate Casein which is what I like for sustained release protein.

Overall : Definitely not as good as ON Casein, as usual you can only guess what what you get because the amount of micellar casein and caseinate is not known, all that is known is that a blend of micellar casein and calcium caseinate is the most prevalent ingredient. It’s poor mixability and foaming make me dislike it too and make it harder to use than ON stuff. Overall it’s definitely cheaper than ON Casein but not by much and only in 4kg tubs. If there were an ON Casein tub that was 4kg and within 10% of the price then there is no competition in my mind. Given that there isn’t, this is a good alternative if you’re on a bit of a budget. It’s a good day-round protein, not for pre or post workout.

ON = Optimum Nutrition (my benchmark).

Dymatize Elite Whey

I got some Dymatize to try after rave reviews from a bunch of places. I grabbed the flavours that people recommended, the Butter Toffee and the Cafe Mocha flavours. I always drink my protein with water, so that’s what I’ve used here.

Mixability isn’t anywhere near Optimum Nutrition Whey. With the Optimum you basically shake it two or three times and that’s all you need, the rest is overkill. With the Dymatize you shake for ten or more seconds and it’s still not mixed. It also froths quite a bit which personally I don’t like.

Flavour of the Cafe Mocha is alright, it tastes basically like a shot of coffee mixed with some weak chocolate whey. The aftertaste is of coffee and no weird chemical-ness that I could detect.

Flavour of the Butter Toffee is bad, it has a weird taste in your nose and it mixes quite badly. It froths a lot and there were chunks left in the shaker. The after taste was quite strange and definitely wasn’t anything toffee or butter like.

I don’t see what the deal is with this stuff to my mind after have three types of the Optimum Whey and the Optimum Casein I’d say that ON craps on Dymatize Whey. The chocolate ON with some coffee is better than the Dymatize Mocha and the Dymatize Butter Toffee is just bareable.

Mr Supplement for the Win

They had a good run with me for a while then a few bad orders that were very late, or didn’t arrive and I couldn’t get in contact with them. That was over Christmas but still being uncontactable to your customers is fairly inexcusable.

Since then I’ve known a few people that have had what was my typical experience with Mr Supplement of overnight or almost overnight order fulfillment. That’s from Sydney all the way to Perth in Australia overnight from ordering in the morning to receiving the following morning. In Australia that’s fantastic online service!

I decided to give them another go. I placed an order late Monday evening, it as fulfilled on Tuesday and arrived Wednesday morning. Effectively that’s overnight service when you take into account business hours. I am very happy indeed to get this level of service again.

Mr Supplement aren’t the cheapest, but with free delivery for orders over $150 and overnight delivery I think it’s worth it. I’ll be placing another order in a couple of weeks so hopefully this trend continues!

Optimum Nutrition Casein

Product Reviews No Comments

I’d been waiting to try this stuff for a while. There had been mixed reviews on taste and mixability but after trying their whey I was pretty confident this would be another great product.

They boast that it contains a stack of Micellar Casein in it which seems to be all the rage at the moment as far as a sort of meal replacement type protein. It’s a very slowly digested protein that gels in contact with the acid in your stomach and makes you feel fuller for longer. It’s chock full of amino acids and the various building blocks you require to build muscle.

Other than the micellar casein there is also calcium caseinate so it’s a bit of a blend which I prefer anyway, I think it’s better to attack from two places than one.

For the velocity diet the reccomended blend is between 50/50 to 80/20 for casein to whey with whey only for your first meal out of bed and post workout. I’ll be mixing it 50/50 for my normal shakes now.

Personally I think it’s great. I got the chocolate flavour and it’s bloody beautiful to me, it has an unusual aftertaste but it doesn’t linger and isn’t off putting at all. It mixes very easily though it does thicken up quite a bit. I find for a casein only shake you need about 3-4x the water and you still get a thicker shake.  I like it, it’s like having an actual milkshake.

The casein, whey mixing is easy and nothing unexpected happens. I mix my strawberry whey with the chocolate casein and get a thick, delicious shake.

I have to say I have no complaints at all with this stuff. Given the cost of other equivalents it’s quite cheap and allows you to make a custom whey/casein blend if you really are that keen. Taste is really, really nice and the mixability is great.

I’m not sure why people would say this is no good, to me it’s as good as their whey (which is amongst the best) and just as tasty. I even prefer the casein chocolate to the whey chocolate flavour!

For the V-Diet it’s great, and even just for your typical daily shakes and before bed, perfect!

MyoPure Milk Protein Concentrate

Product Reviews No Comments

I got my delivery today of some Milk Protein Concentrate from Myopure today. It’s supposed to be 80% micellar casein and 20% whey which is perfect for the velocity diet. I was a little worried about the taste as it’s unflavoured but these fears turned out to be unwarranted.

It doesn’t taste like anything at all. Quite literally it’s as bland as you’ll get. It literally has the consistency of something like mushed up paper in water and tastes like nothing. There is only a slight milky aftertaste. I’d say mixed with Milo, cordial, fruit juice, coffee, or any number of other flavours this would be brilliant!

Myopure are well known for creating quality powders so the content of it is pretty much of the highest quality. For anyone looking to know what it tastes like have no fear it’s absolutely fine.

Microwave Steam Bags

Product Reviews No Comments

Let me just sum up this entire article. These things are great!!

I bought them thinking they might be a bit of a gimmick but they aren’t, they’re highly effective. As advertised they do indeed steam your veges rather than boil them in their own juices so most of the moisture from the veges is released rather than staying in the packet.

I cooked some potato, some broccoli and some brussel sprouts, so a wide variety of types of vegetables and all came out really well. Especially the broccoli which was still very green, firm and not stewed as tends to be the case with microwave broccoli cooking.

It also speeds up the cooking process over containers, and it seems to cook more uniformly as I used to have to stir the potato for instance but in the bags even clumps of potato seemed to cook very well.

I think they’re built not to be re-used but I’m going to try and reuse mine for the next meal and see how they go.

I think if you’re eating a reasonably amount of fresh vegetables and you want to have them done quickly and use less water and electricity doing it then you can’t go past these microwave steam bags.

Optimum Nutrition Whey : Strawberry

Product Reviews No Comments

I really, really love the chocolate flavoured whey from this brand. It’s not got any gross after taste and it’s surprisingly not sweet. I can’t wait to try it in milk, I think it’ll be amazing.

The strawberry is not so good. It’s not as bad as the Max’s by any stretch of the imagination but it does have a weird after taste that I’m not a fan of. The way to get around this seems to mix it half and half with the chocolate flavour, but it’s pretty strong and still comes through.

Mixability is still awesome, you could probably even just swirl it in a glass it’s that good. It’s also very thin which is different to what I’ve experienced with protein powders, though I tend to like it this way better.

The strawberry is good for a change but it’s definitely not as good as chocolate and does have a weird after taste. The burps afterward taste like strawberry milk though so it’s not all bad.

I think I’ll try banana or choc mint next!
